Clare Jenkinson found these starfish on the beach in Tergnmanth one morning – they had been washed up by the tide and it was too late to put them back. So Clare wanted to save the moment in a painting, and it was a privelege for her to be able to study these creatures up close. Sometimes the most memorable moments in nature happen unexpectedly. While walking along Teignmouth Beach one quiet morning, Devon artist Clare Jenkinson came across five beautiful starfish that had been washed ashore by the tide. Although they could no longer be returned to the sea, the discovery inspired Clare to capture their quiet beauty in this original watercolour.

Taking time to carefully observe each starfish, Clare painted both their upper and lower surfaces, revealing the intricate textures, gentle colours and remarkable details that are so often overlooked.
