John Skinner - Devon Artist

John Skinner, Devon Artist, Inspired by the Beauty of South Devon

Few artists capture the atmosphere, colour and character of South Devon quite like John Skinner. Known for his distinctive watercolours and vibrant landscapes, John Skinner, Devon artist, paints paintings that celebrate the places that mean the most to people. From the sweeping views across the Teignmouth estuary to the changing light over Shaldon and the dramatic beauty of Dartmoor, his work has become loved by collectors throughout Devon and beyond.

What makes John’s artwork so special is not simply what he paints, but how he paints it. His unique style creates a richness and depth that brings familiar landscapes to life, often evoking memories, emotions and a strong sense of place.

An Unconventional Artistic Journey

Born in London in 1959, John began painting seriously while living in Newcastle during his twenties. Largely self-taught, he developed his own distinctive approach to watercolour, creating the jewel-like colours and luminous quality that have become hallmarks of his work today.

Before becoming a full-time artist, John’s creative path took many unexpected turns. During the 1980s he fronted the cult pop band The Shed, receiving regular radio airplay and even a feature on BBC Radio One.

His career took a different direction when acclaimed children’s author Ann Thwaite discovered his artwork and invited him to illustrate her book Amy and the Night-time Visit. The project was well received and John was shortlisted for a prestigious national award, helping establish his reputation as a professional artist.

From Television to Fine Art

Over the years, John has worked across a wide variety of creative industries.

His talents have taken him into television and film, contributing to productions including Spitting Image and projects for Walt Disney. He has designed large-scale murals, created illustrations for commercial clients and completed specialist signwriting commissions across the UK.

His work can still be seen in public spaces, businesses and buildings throughout Britain and Europe.

Falling in Love with Devon

Everything changed during a visit to Devon in 1995.

Like many people who discover South Devon for the first time, John was captivated by the coastline, estuaries, rolling countryside and unique quality of light. What started as a short holiday became a permanent move.

Today John lives in Teignmouth with his family and continues to draw inspiration from the landscapes surrounding him. Whether exploring coastal paths, wandering along the estuary or heading out onto Dartmoor, the natural beauty of Devon remains at the heart of his work.

Many local people instantly recognise the locations within his paintings, while visitors often choose his artwork as a lasting reminder of places they have grown to love.

“Painting for people.”

His paintings are not just pictures of places. They are celebrations of memories, favourite views, family holidays, peaceful walks and moments of connection with the landscapes we cherish most.

For many collectors, owning a John Skinner artwork is about bringing a little piece of Devon into their home — a daily reminder of somewhere special.
