Keith Bowcock is a Devon artist whose beautifully observed paintings celebrate the ever-changing landscapes, dramatic coastlines and natural beauty of the South West. Working primarily in oils, while also enjoying both watercolour and acrylic, Keith is known for his careful attention to light, colour and detail. His artwork reflects a lifetime spent observing the natural world and captures the atmosphere of the places that have inspired him throughout his life.
Originally from the Midlands, Keith moved to Devon in 1983 while pursuing a successful career in interior design. Having lived in both the South Hams and Teignmouth before settling in Torquay, he quickly developed a deep appreciation for Devon’s stunning coastline, rolling countryside and rich wildlife. These landscapes continue to provide endless inspiration for his paintings and have become the heart of his artistic work.
Although painting had always been an enjoyable hobby, it was after his early retirement that Keith was able to devote the time and energy needed to fully explore his creativity. Since 2012 he has immersed himself in painting, continually refining his techniques and experimenting with different media. While he enjoys the fresh spontaneity of watercolour and the versatility of acrylic, it is oil painting that has become his greatest passion. He particularly appreciates the richness, depth of colour and flexibility that oils offer, allowing him to build texture, atmosphere and subtle light within each composition.
Observation has always been central to Keith’s approach as an artist. His long-standing interests in ornithology, nature, walking and photography have trained him to notice the small details that many people overlook. Whether studying the changing light across the sea, the intricate textures of a weathered landscape or the character within a portrait, Keith believes that careful observation is the foundation of every successful painting. This attention to detail gives his work both realism and warmth while capturing the unique character of each subject.
Keith’s artistic journey began with studying Art at A-Level in 1963 before developing valuable draughtsmanship skills throughout his professional career. Although largely self-taught as a painter, he has drawn inspiration from several respected Devon artists, including Bob Tucker, Donald Ayres, Peter Coslett and Ray Balkwill. Their influence, combined with years of personal experimentation and dedication, has helped him develop a style that is unmistakably his own.
Landscape and seascape painting remain at the heart of Keith’s work, inspired by the remarkable scenery found across Devon. More recently he has also developed a growing interest in portraiture, enjoying the challenge of capturing both likeness and personality. Whatever the subject, Keith carefully considers composition before focusing on the qualities of light, colour and atmosphere that bring each painting to life.
Keith is an active member of both the Torbay Guild of Artists and the Teignmouth Art Society and has exhibited widely in exhibitions throughout Devon. His work reflects not only technical skill but also a genuine affection for the landscapes, coastlines and communities that surround him.
