David Beer – Landscape & Seascape Artist Inspired by Cornwall & Devon

David Beer, Artist inspired by Cornwall & Devon

David Beer is an accomplished British artist whose expressive landscapes and seascapes have been shaped by decades of painting, teaching and exhibiting throughout the South West. Best known for his atmospheric oil paintings created with a palette knife, David captures the ever-changing light, colour and energy of Cornwall’s coastline and countryside with remarkable confidence and sensitivity. He now does this with areas of Devon now including Teignmouth, Dawlish and Dawlish Warren.

Originally from the historic seaside town of Whitstable in Kent, David’s creative journey began with a strong foundation in art education. He trained as a teacher at Bishop Otter College in Chichester, specialising in pottery, before later discovering a passion for painting while attending evening art classes during his time as a Head Teacher in Corsham, Wiltshire.

It was during this period that David attended residential courses at the renowned St Ives School of Painting, an experience that would prove to be a turning point in his artistic career. Inspired by the unique quality of light, dramatic coastline and rich artistic heritage of St Ives, he developed a lasting connection with the town that continues to influence his work today.

In 1986 David made the move to St Ives, Cornwall, where he spent eleven years teaching in nearby Penzance. Alongside his teaching career, he played an active role in promoting art education, taking special responsibility for art within his school and leading professional development courses for fellow teachers across the region.

David also became closely involved with one of Cornwall’s most significant cultural developments. Before Tate St Ives opened its doors, he served as the Education Co-ordinator for the St Ives Tate Action Group, helping support the educational vision surrounding what would become one of Britain’s leading galleries for modern art.

Following his retirement from teaching in 1998, David devoted himself entirely to painting. He continued developing his own distinctive artistic style while running the successful Penhaven Gallery in St Ives, which he had established in 1994. For many years the gallery became home to his original artwork and provided visitors with an opportunity to experience his paintings within the inspiring surroundings that had influenced them.

In 2009 David relocated to Saltash before later settling in the Cornish village of Menheniot, where he continues to paint today. His work is inspired by the dramatic coastlines, expansive skies and rolling landscapes of Cornwall and the South West, producing paintings that balance bold texture with a wonderful sense of atmosphere.

Working primarily in oils with a palette knife, David creates richly textured paintings that celebrate the movement of the sea, the changing weather and the natural beauty of the landscape. The confident palette knife technique gives his paintings depth, energy and expressive character, allowing viewers to almost feel the wind, light and movement within each scene. Alongside his oil paintings, David also enjoys producing life studies using pastel and acrylic, demonstrating the versatility developed throughout his long artistic career.

David’s artwork has been exhibited in galleries across the United Kingdom and has even reached an international audience through exhibitions in New York, reflecting the broad appreciation of his distinctive style and artistic vision.

Today, David continues to paint with the same enthusiasm that first drew him to the coast of Cornwall many years ago. His work celebrates the landscapes that surround him while inviting viewers to slow down, appreciate the changing seasons and reconnect with the beauty of the natural world.
