Atmospheric Paintings Inspired by Devon, the Coast and Everyday Life
Trish Edwards is a talented Devon-based artist and painter whose work captures everything from dramatic seascapes and changing weather to portraits, life paintings and the landscapes of the South West.
Working in acrylics, oils, watercolours and mixed media, Trish enjoys exploring different subjects and techniques rather than limiting herself to one particular style.
Her work can be particularly atmospheric. While a bright, sunny day might seem like the obvious choice for a coastal painting, Trish is often more interested in what happens when the weather changes.
“I rarely paint simply bright sunny days – I find more interesting contrast in light and shade when the weather is inclement, or when the sun is fighting to get through cloud!”
It is this interest in light, atmosphere and changing conditions that gives many of her paintings their distinctive character.
Inspired by Devon and the South West

Living in Devon provides Trish with an almost endless source of inspiration.
A day spent on Dartmoor, a walk beside the coast or simply noticing an interesting change in the weather can all provide the starting point for a new painting.
Trish says that what she paints often depends on whatever inspires her at the time.
That might mean responding to the dramatic colours and changing light of the Devon coastline, working on a portrait, or exploring the effects of climate change through her art.
More recently, she has been particularly interested in seascape painting, creating coastal scenes that focus on atmosphere, light and shade rather than simply depicting a postcard-perfect sunny day.
For anyone who knows the Devon coast, this approach will probably feel very familiar. The sea can look completely different from one day to the next – calm and bright one moment, dramatic and brooding the next.
Pet Portraits, Life Painting and Drawing

Alongside her love of landscapes and seascapes, Trish has a particular passion for portrait and life painting.
She continues to attend workshops to develop and improve this side of her work, constantly looking for ways to refine her understanding of people, form, light and expression.
Her interest in portraiture also extends to our four-legged friends, and Trish accepts commissions for pet portraits.
A commissioned painting of a much-loved dog, cat or other pet can make a wonderfully personal piece of artwork and a lasting reminder of a much-loved companion.
