Paul has been supporting botanical and garden magazine titles, garden product packaging and editorial for many years as a professional illustrator. His main exhibition and competition genre has been wildlife art for many years, however there is excitement building in the studio this year as art is being produced for the Botanical Art Society annual exhibition!
For the last three years Paul has been the Associate Lecturer for South Devon College, teaching botanical illustration to students from every background and skill level. Courses have also been delivered at Dartington, art societies and for private groups.
Paul has been professionally recognized as an illustrator since his first paid commission aged just 15. Studying Graphic Design at Sheffield Hallam University he found his love of drawing, of hand produced art to have largely been replaced by the AppleMac and so struck out on his own, initially financially supported through a career in retail management, finding his love of fine drawing was his calling albeit a struggle in the new world of computers.
Paul’s first wildlife pencil, an elephant drawn from life in Paignton Zoological Park, caught the attention of a visiting David Shepherd, who took the artwork home and produced the very first prints of Paul’s art. This first wildlife original was then entered into Wildart 2000, where it unbelievably won second prize. Pip McGarry took the first prize and years later through MIWAS would be instrumental in Paul’s belief of his art.
The very first print was then presented to Gary Hodges, the world’s number one pencil wildlife artist, at his solo Mall Gallery Exhibition of the same year. Gary would become more than an idol as the years took Paul’s unique “from life” realistic pencil art to new levels. Twice exhibiting and a centre spread in the magazine of MIWAS preceded two finalists positions in DSWF Wildlife Artist of the Year, wildlife exhibitions with Haddon Galleries, demonstrations of his art for many art societies and, most recently, Associate Lecturer at South Devon College for botanical illustration, wildlife teacher for various select courses in Devon and very soon a full online presence with online courses through to galleries of his work through the years.
And what an eclectic mixture of art it has become. From watercolour biscuit packaging to engraved glass doors of restaurants, elephants to daisies, children’s illustration to stormy Dartmoor landscapes, Opera and ballet to yacht interiors. A whole host of hand produced art has given Paul opportunities to keep drawing wildlife, paint botanicals and find new artists to join him on this amazing journey which in this post-Covid future will see Paul return to international exhibitions and with the love of his young family, refine his illustrations to his first loves; wildlife, botanical and children’s illustration.
