Fair trade is about much more than simply buying and selling products. It is about creating a trading system that puts people, communities, and the environment at its heart. The artisans and organisations we work with are proud members of the World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO). The WFTO a global community of businesses and social enterprises committed to making trade fair for everyone. Unlike conventional supply chains, where producers often receive only a small fraction of the final retail price, WFTO-verified organisations follow a strict set of 10 Fair Trade Principles designed to ensure fair wages, safe working conditions, gender equality, environmental responsibility, and transparency in business practices. You can learn more about these principles here: https://wfto.com/10-principles-of-fair-trade
The World Fair Trade Organisation
What makes WFTO membership particularly special is that it goes beyond simple product certification. Instead of certifying individual items, the WFTO verifies the entire organisation, ensuring that fairness is embedded in everything they do. From sourcing materials to supporting workers and communities. According to the WFTO, their network connects over 900 social enterprises and fair trade organisations in more than 70 countries, helping provide sustainable livelihoods for thousands of artisans and small producers around the world (https://wfto.com). Many of these artisans work in rural areas where employment opportunities are limited, and fair trade partnerships allow them to earn reliable incomes while preserving traditional crafts that might otherwise disappear.
The Items that are be produced
From hand-carved wooden homeware and beautifully woven textiles to intricate decorative pieces and ethically sourced gifts. Every item created by these skilled makers carries a story of craftsmanship, culture, and resilience. Fair trade also plays an important role in empowering women; globally, a large proportion of artisans involved in fair trade initiatives are women who gain financial independence and opportunities to support their families and educate their children. By choosing products from WFTO member organisations, customers are helping support ethical trade practices that prioritise people and the planet rather than profit alone. In a world where mass production often dominates, fair trade offers a different path — one where every purchase can contribute to sustainable livelihoods, preserve traditional skills, and build stronger communities across the globe.
